about

“Manifesto,” our Funk single from “All of You,” is a danceable shoutout to all those around Chicago, the US, and the world who have been fighting for social change for decades. The refrain of the song declares: "We're on a mission to free all of the people / We got a vision of peace on earth / And our decision to shape reality will be in our every act and word." It is an empowering anthem and affirmation of a calling that so many people have responded to in so many ways throughout the years, especially in the wake of the 2020 uprisings. “Manifesto” strikes a refreshingly upbeat tone while facing the seriousness of our times head-on. The song celebrates those who are building movements to confront the failings of the current system, failings that have recently been exposed by the coronavirus throughout the world. Lively horns supplied by the horn section of Chicago’s Reggae-Jazz band “Fatbook” (Constantine Alexander, trumpet; Roy McGrath, tenor saxophone; Evan Jacobson, trombone) add a jubilant and old-school flavor, richly layered with record scratches and percussion. The sax solo by featured musician Roy McGrath and Gottlieb’s own flute solo on this track inject the song with vital energy and much-needed hopefulness to inspire us through the chaos. Crowd chants and bullhorn-effected vocals give the track a raw, live feel, setting the tone for an album that is both socially pointed and musically ecstatic.

lyrics

I’m on a mission to free all of the people
I got a vision of peace on earth
and my decision to shape reality
will be in my every act and word

I’ve heard the calling to serve the revolution
I’m only wanting to save the world
and I’ve been longing to give to the solution
all the gifts that I’ve got like pearls

I have a purpose, a role to play in history
I’m at the service of humankind
and in the furnace of this society
I do believe will be forged a diamond

And so I’m ready to put it into action
won’t get too heady but I’ll use my head
and I’ll be steady creating and attracting
what my spirit knows lies ahead

We’re on a mission to free all of the people
We got a vision of peace on earth
and our decision to shape reality
will be in our every act and word
